Ibrahim’s journey

Increasingly, financial struggles and problem- debt issues are challenges being faced for the very first time by individuals from various backgrounds. When these challenges become overwhelming, seeking help from money and debt advice charities can be a crucial step towards regaining financial stability.

Ibrahim, a single man in his 50s, faced debt issues after struggling with alcohol addiction, depression, and bipolar disorder. Having been in his company for 8 years, Ibrahim faced a series of setbacks. This included a change of manager, and a knock in confidence, which resulted in him drinking more, and subsequently losing his well-paid job in IT.

This led to a deterioration in his mental health and his depression and bipolar disorder became difficult to manage. Ibrahim also started having panic attacks and felt he was not able to manage and quickly started blaming himself for the debts he had accrued. These challenges led to Ibrahim accumulating more and more debt in the form of rent arrears, credit card debts, and loans. Despite his high functioning nature, Ibrahim struggled with shame and embarrassment regarding his debt, which initially caused him to cancel several appointments with us.

The persistence of our Rooted advisor played a crucial role in building trust with Ibrahim, reassuring him that seeking help for debt-related issues is a common and necessary step towards financial recovery. By conducting a thorough assessment of Ibrahim’s financial situation, including income maximisation checks, debt analysis, and a credit report review, we were able to provide tailored debt strategies and options to Ibrahim. Having considered his options, Ibrahim ultimately opted for a Debt Relief Order; an option that would give him a fresh start and the bandwidth to deal with his health challenges.

Despite the stigma and barriers Ibrahim continued to struggle with in addressing his debts, we supported Ibrahim through the step-by-step process of a Debt Relief order, ensuring that he received the necessary guidance and assistance every step of the way. This included painstakingly speaking to 18 different creditors.

With our support, the total debt of £14,369.72 has now been written off, and Ibrahim could not have been happier with the outcome. Whilst his debt has been cleared, because of his job loss, Ibrahim is still having to use a food bank due to the high cost of living, but he is now looking to get back to working as soon as possible. Most importantly, he has the space to manage his mental health conditions.

Ibrahim demonstrates the significant impact that money and debt advice charities, such as Rooted, can have on individuals facing financial difficulties. By offering personalised support, guidance, and practical solutions, we can empower individuals to confront their debt issues, build the confidence needed to take positive action, and help them make informed decisions, ultimately working towards financial recovery.

“I felt so ashamed about my debts. I cannot thank you (Rooted Finance) enough for your patience and for everything you have done for me” – Ibrahim

“This has been a long road to engaging the client, initially Ibrahim did not want to share his information with us due to embarrassment, guilt and shame. I’m delighted for him, and we know he has the resilience and determination to continue moving forward with his life. We want everyone to feel they can ask for help and get the support they need.” Shajida – Advice Manager
